Kids Cafe Program
The Kids Cafe Program provides free nutritious meals and snacks to needy children at safe, accessible sites. Second Harvest’s Kids Cafes are free after-school programs that offer homework assistance, nutrition education and recreational activities along with a meal. This program helps provide the proper nutrition necessary for overall growth, physical and cognitive development and satisfactory performance in school.
Second Harvest creates the menus and obtains the food for the Kids Cafes as well as monitors the operation of the overall program in northwest Pennsylvania. The Kids Cafe program itself was designed by Feeding America, the food bank network that Second Harvest belongs to.
This program began in Savannah, Georgia, in 1989 when two young brothers were found late one night in the kitchen of their housing project’s community center. This incident brought home the desperation of hungry children and the growing need for food assistance among children in our land of plenty. Children comprise 30 percent of the people Second Harvest serves.
Second Harvest operates 4 of the more than 17,000 Kids Cafes throughout the United States. Second Harvest’s locations are as follows:
- John F. Kennedy Center Kids Cafe, 2021 East 20th Street, Erie
- Little Italy Kids Cafe, 462 West 18th Street, Erie
- Sister Gus’s Kids Cafe, 310 East 10th Street, Erie
- Booker T. Washington Center Kids Cafe, 1720 Holland Street, Erie
