Produce Express

New and Improved! Mobile Food Pantry Program now upgraded to Produce Express Program

The Second Harvest Food Bank is making a commitment to provide healthy, nutritious produce to food insecure people in northwest Pennsylvania through the Produce Express program.

By making fresh, healthy produce available to those who normally would not have access to it, Second Harvest and our program partners are working to encourage the community to eat healthier, feel healthier and to make better nutrition choices.

The Produce Express program is eliminating barriers to getting food out to those in need by distributing a truckload of food for up to 200 struggling families within a few hours.

Volunteers pack and hand out bags of fresh produce and other grocery products that can be used as supplements to meals for recipients.

Those receiving food qualify at income levels no greater than 150% of the federal poverty guidelines, based on household size.

At all Produce Express distributions:

  • Public participation is free.
  • Pre-registration is required.
  • Must bring proof of residency (old phone bill, utility bill, etc.)
  • We ask the participants to bring a box or basket to carry grocery products home.

The income guidelines, starting July 1, 2014, for receiving food at the Produce Express are as follows:

Household of 1:  no more than $1,459/month
Household of 2:  no more than $1,966/month
Household of 3:  no more than $2,474/month
Household of 4:  no more than $2,981/month
Household of 5:  no more than $3,489/month
*For each additional family member add:  $508/month

The program has been very well received since its inception in June 2008 when it began as the Mobile Food Pantry Program and is expected to keep growing.

Sponsor a distribution(s). Monetary donations are gratefully accepted to help expand our Produce Express program. Whether you donate online or by check, you may designate that your gift is to be used for the Produce Express program.

Host a Produce Express. Second Harvest partners with such organizations as churches, community centers, public housing complexes and fire halls to organize mobile food pantry visits.
