Hunger Education
Second Harvest is committed to educating the public about hunger, its causes and how
to alleviate it.
In 2009, Second Harvest distributed more than 7 million pounds of food to 72,600 people in northwest Pennsylvania. With a greater understanding of hunger issues, the community can help us continue our mission to feed people who are hungry and eliminate the waste of food.
To discover the faces behind hunger, Feeding America, the nation's largest organization of emergency food providers leads a comprehensive hunger study across the nation. Second Harvest along with other Feeding America member food banks, participates in the "Hunger in America" study every four years.
The purpose of the study is to assess the hunger problem in America. The food bank network conducts extensive research on emergency food programs for low-income individuals. Read the most current local and national results in Hunger Facts.
