Fairview Evergreen Nurseries, Inc., is a wholesale grower of top quality ornamental plants. They supply landscapers, wholesalers and garden centers in the United States and Canada. The company is family-owned and operated and has been in business for over 100 years. But this company is more to the Second Harvest Food Bank than a successful business.
For the past five years, Fairview Evergreen Nurseries has grown acres and acres of corn
specifically to share with their employees and Second Harvest. Since 2008, they have donated close to 30,000 pounds of corn. That translates to approximately 120,000 ears of corn enjoyed by the people Second Harvest serves through our member agencies.
Christine Hetz-Phillips, co-owner of Fairview Evergreen Nursery, recently shared information on her organization's partnership with the Second Harvest Food Bank:
- What was your intention when you originally planted corn on your land?
“You have to remember that this is a 102 year old business! When granddad started out they planted corn so they could feed themselves and I’m sure that for those first few years, they would take the corn to market in Erie. Now we plant 800 acres of field corn to sell and about 8 acres of sweet corn. We plant the sweet corn at two different times so our families and our employee families can enjoy it for a longer period of time.”
- What benefit do you feel your company gets from planting and donating corn to the Second Harvest Food Bank?
“I guess it is simply that intangible benefit of knowing that the corn will help to feed people that are hungry and possibly help one child have hope for a better tomorrow. None of us like to see waste and Second Harvest Food Bank has been extremely effective at utilizing this extra sweet corn.”
- How did you choose the Second Harvest Food Bank to receive this special donation of corn for the last five years?
“If my memory serves me, Sister Karen stopped out and gave us some information about Second Harvest. My church has had a food pantry for quite a few years now and we had been intermittently trying to help them. This was a way to be more effective and to help more people.”
The Second Harvest Food Bank is proud of its relationship with Fairview Evergreen Nurseries because together we are making a difference in the fight against hunger in northwest Pennsylvania.
