Donor Spotlight
Spotlight on Troyer Brothers, LLC

Our spotlight is on a local farm that has been in operation in Erie County for 70 years. In our quest to find more fresh produce, Troyer Brothers Inc. has been a blessing to the Second Harvest Food Bank. We spoke with Vern Troyer, one of the three brothers that own Troyer Brothers. This is what he told us:
“Troyer Brothers, Inc. is a family farm with the third generation now involved. The farm was established in 1943 by Vernon and Clayton Troyer and this year marks its 70th consecutive year of growing potatoes in northwest Pennsylvania. The company also grows and ships new red potatoes nationwide all winter long from its Ft. Myers, Florida farm. The people of Union City and all of northwest Pennsylvania have been great to all our families for many years. My brothers David and Donald and myself are proud to partner with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest PA. It’s just a small way of saying thank you to everyone, plus we know potatoes are truly appreciated by so many.
“Mariana Skonieczka from Second Harvest contacted me in September of 2012. She realized there was a great need for fresh potatoes within her program at the food bank and was inquiring if there was a possibility for a donation of potatoes from our farm in Union City. We were more than happy to help out. Over the next six or seven months, approximately four full semi loads of new red potatoes were donated and distributed in the northwest Pennsylvania area."
“Making the donation was a gratifying experience for all of us involved, especially because we know it was so beneficial to local people. Hopefully, it can be duplicated this coming harvest season. Second Harvest continues to be a wonderful asset for the area, providing the food for thousands of nutritious meals every week.”
Second Harvest would like to thank Vern Troyer for his kind words and for Troyer Brothers, Inc. for helping us to provide fresh potatoes to the hungry people in northwest PA. We are proud to have the Troyers as part of our community for so many years and wish them continued success as an outstanding company.
