Volunteer
Volunteers make a difference at Second Harvest Food Bank of NW PA. Every day volunteers perform a variety of projects to help those in need in our community.
Volunteer and become part of the Second Harvest family!
There are many different volunteer opportunities available to individuals and groups at Second Harvest. Approximately 85 regular volunteers donate their time during one single work week. Volunteers include school aged children, college students, adults, retirees and anyone who is looking to give back to the community. Volunteer opportunities are available six days a week with flexible hours.
What are the different duties volunteers perform at Second Harvest?
Product Re-Work
Second Harvest often receives product that needs to be sorted, labeled and repackaged for distribution to our member agencies.
Office Work
This consists of typical office jobs: filing, typing, using the copier and bulk mailing.
Food Donation Pick Ups
Second Harvest receives donations from local businesses, grocery stores and food drives on a daily basis. Volunteers are needed to help pick up these items (must be able to lift 50 lbs.).
Special Events
Throughout the year, Second Harvest has a variety of special events including: the Letter Carriers' Food Drive, WICU12 Drive Through Food Drive, Buffet on the Bay, and Fall FoodShare. Volunteers help us staff these special events throughout our community.
Gleaning
Volunteers are needed during the months of July through October to glean (pick and gather) fruits and vegetables at farms throughout our region.
What do I need to wear when I volunteer?
All volunteers MUST wear closed-toed shoes in order to volunteer. You should wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty, as our product can be dusty at times. The warehouse tends to be hot in the summer and chilly in the winter, so layered clothing is suggested.
Is there an age restriction?
Individuals must be 14 years of age to volunteer. Children as young as 6 years old are welcome to volunteer with their parent/guardian at one of our designated family nights.
