Volunteer Projects

VOLUNTEER PROJECTS AT
THE SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK

  1. Grocery Reclamation - Assorted donations of nonperishable food items, health aids, paper goods and other products are transported to the Grocery Reclamation Center (GRC) and need work done to them to prepare these items for distribution. Projects may include sorting, labeling and repackaging food for distribution.

  2. BackPack Program - Each week, over 1,000 bags are packed and provided to children in area schools. These BackPacks contain enough food so that the receiving children will have something to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner over the weekends when they are not being fed through their school lunch and breakfast programs.

  3. Marketplace – Volunteers will inspect and stock products on shelves in the Emergency Shelf for distribution to Soup Kitchens and Shelters.

  4.  CSFP (Senior Box Program) - Approximately 2,600 boxes consisting of 16 items are packed for income eligible seniors each month.

  5. Gleaning – Volunteers will assist staff by picking fruits and vegetables at area farms.

  6. Office Work - Volunteers are needed once a month to perform various routine office tasks, including filing, stuffing envelopes and data entry.

  7. Grocery Store Pick-Ups – Volunteers will assist our Warehouse Drivers by accompanying them in a company truck to pick up donations at local grocery stores and outlets.

  8. Special Events – Volunteers will help the Second Harvest staff to coordinate and execute such special events as:  The Letter Carriers' Food Drive (Stamp Out Hunger), Lilly Broadcasting Holiday Drive-Thru Food Drive, Buffet on the Bay, Fall FoodShare Food Drive and Tops Food for Families Food Drive.
