In 1989, Second Harvest Food Bank of NW PA began the Bread Box Awards. This event, held
in October in our warehouse, recognizes the efforts of groups and individuals who do
projects for the Food Bank. The awards honor those who did the most
during the last year to increase public awareness of hunger in our area.
Awards are presented in nine categories: Elementary Schools, Middle
Schools, High Schools, Colleges/Technical Schools, Individuals, Churches,
Organizations, and Small Business/Big Business.
A first and second place winner is selected in each category. The main award, an actual
bread box, is presented to one of the first place winners for the best community event for
the Food Bank. The bread box rotates to someone new every year.
Judging is based on the originality of the event, number of people involved, and the
amount of money or food raised.

The
Second Harvest Food Bank is the only non-profit in northwest
Pennsylvania
that is able to distribute millions of pounds of grocery products
to help feed people in need each year.
Second Harvest
obtains the food, then, supplies it to its
member agencies, who in turn, distribute it to people within the
Food Bank’s eleven county service area. During 2006, the Food
Bank distributed 6.5 million pounds of food.
